hi Jan,

I've a few questioning concerning the license matter.

1. For 1 purchased license, does the serial number allow a re-installation onto the same PC but on a different partitioned OSs. Say for example, I've a PC that has 4 partitioned WIN XP OSs, in which I need to install onto 3 of the OSs, would this be possible or do I need to buy 3 licenses for it?
Or is there a cheaper option whereby a de-activation setting is available for us to choose from?

2. I previously have X-Ref 1.0 installed. How do I perform an upgrade from 1.0 to 1.1?

Thanks.

Hi,

1 - the license is "per seat" if you are running the plug-in with multiple InDesign installations (for example CS3+CS4 or different OS partitions) on the same physical machine, it counts as one.

2 - Just download the new installer and install over the previous one.

Best reagards,

Dear Jan,

I am now considering purchase of cross-reference pro, and would like to understand some license issue better. Suppose, I have activated and de-activated X-Ref three times on one PC. What happens when I try to do it for the fourth time? And, most important, what is the status of my license after that? Does it mean it is expired? If not, what is the sense (legally) of contacting support in this case--should we regard that as just technical procedure, or as an application for extending the license (i.e. the application can be turned down). Thanks a lot for your explanations.

Best wishes,

Andrei

Dear Andrei,

You can activate and de-activate the license for unlimited number of times. Your license can not expire due to this procedure. If your computer crashes unexpectedly and you are not able to de-activate, support will reset this activation (number and frequency of these being within reason it is a technical procedure).

Best regards,

Jan

Thanks a lot Jan.

It may appear too meticulous or just stupid, but I still have a question concerning the matter.

I have read that using the program on two machines (say, home laptop and office desktop--not simultaneously) is within the personal license. Which is great. Though, I would easily understand and accept it if it were not. What seems quite uneasy for me is, I can only activate (that is use) the soft on condition that I have access to Internet AND Goldwein Research Ltd. still exists and, in their turn, has access to Internet. If the latter is not true, it seems the program I buy will work exactly until the next de-activation or system crash--is it correct? By no means, it's the matter of what I get for my money, but about reliability and stability of the process I am going to rely upon in my work. What could you tell me on this?

Just in case--I wish Goldwein Research, the X-Ref project and you personally long and successful life...

Andrei

Hello Andrei,

1) The license covers two installed instances not running at the same time (office and home computer is a good examle)
2) Access to internet is needed to activate, but it is not necessary that each machine you activate on is connected. The software can be activated manually using web browser on another computer.
3) Even if Goldwein Research Ltd. and the new DTP Tools Ltd. would cease to exist, you still will be able to activate, because activations are provided by eSellerate inc. and Digital River inc. companies. If the later two companies would cease to provide these services, we will find and provide alternate licensing possibilities.

Thanks,

Jan

Hello Jan,

again, thank you very much for the exhaustive explanation--it is really good to know that somebody has thought about and got solution for the scenario in question--even though it is just theoretical one. In the meantime, after using the plug-in in testing mode for some days I would say it is even more useful than I expected and just elegantly designed and produced--what cannot be said about software very often. Hopefully, will activate my full version very soon. (And hope that this post is not regarded as paid advertising...)

Best,

Andrei

Hi,

I am suddenly getting a "Try-out period has expired error" in my Cross-References plug in for InDesign CS3, which I purchased July 2008. I don't see any way to enter the serial number etc. I tried re-installing it with the original file, but got the same message. Then I read this forum where it said it's OK to download the latest (1.1) without paying for it. I installed it and have the same message. It's been installed on one machine only and nobody else has my serial number. How can I get it to work again?

Thanks,

Hi,

I got a prompt reply from Robert at DTP Tools.

To re-enter your serial number from within InDesign:

1. Select Help -> DTP Tools -> Activate.
The Activate dialog box is displayed.
 2. Enter your serial number.
3. Click Activate.

For some reason, it did not occur to me to look for a plug-in's UI from within InDesign's help.

It's not clear why it stopped working to begin with, but reactivation was easy once I knew where to enter the serial number.
